Consumer and shopping behaviour of Czech households - Potraviny (Food) 2025

In the Potraviny (Food) 2025 survey, the CVVM SOÚ AV ČR surveyed the opinions and attitudes of the Czech public towards food shopping. Respondents reported what activities and shopping habits their households have, how much they spend on food per month, and according to what criteria and where they shop. In the next part of the research we focused on shopping behaviour that may contribute to or prevent food waste.

Czechs most often make grocery purchases several times a week, more than half (52%) of the respondents. Just under a third go shopping once a week (32%) and only 6% buy food every day.

The most common places to buy food are hypermarkets (99% shop there at least sometimes), smaller shops (91%) and specialised shops such as bakeries, butchers etc. (86%). Of the newer forms of shopping, a fifth of respondents (20%) use import shopping at least sometimes (e.g. Rohlík.cz, Košík.cz, iTesco).

Of the activities that are more likely to contribute to food waste, people are most likely to buy food because it is on sale or in a convenient package (92% of respondents do this at least occasionally) and least likely to buy food they do not need (26% of respondents do this at least occasionally).

The most commonly practiced activities perceived as preventing food waste are checking the stock in the pantry and fridge before going shopping (83% do this at least sometimes) and planning meals to be prepared with the food purchased (81%).
