Perceived environmental impact of food and attitudes towards packaging materials - Potraviny (Food) 2025

In the research Potraviny 2025, CVVM SOÚ AV ČR surveyed the opinions and attitudes of the Czech public towards food shopping, packaging materials and preferences regarding shopping. In this part of the research, we focused on shopping behaviour with respect to the environment, shopping with or without packaging or how relevant it is for Czech citizens to consider the environmental impact of food production

Two-fifths (39%) of Czech citizens are interested in the issue of packaging in which they buy food. Three-fifths (60%) report the opposite attitude.

Half (51%) of the respondents do not deliberately avoid any packaging material when buying food, but if they do, it is most often plastic (31%), with aluminium being the second most common material (12%).

Price is consistently the most important consideration when buying food, ranked first by almost half (47%) of respondents. This was followed by composition (24%) and origin of the food (20%). The least important factors in the choice are the method of rearing/growing and the packaging material of the product.

Among household activities aimed at environmental protection, respondents most frequently mentioned sorting of general waste, which is always or often practiced by 92% of them. In second place is the use of their own shopping bag (90%) and in third place composting (63%). On the other hand, the least frequent purchases of fruit and vegetables are made in “endless bags” (24%) and completely packaging-free purchases (2%).

Almost three-fifths (58%) of respondents consider the environmental impact of the production of the food they buy to be important. The opposite view is held by 39% of respondents. From 2022 onwards, there is a slight increase in the proportion of people considering the environmental impact of food production to be important.
