The Czech public’s views on local food – Potraviny (Food) 2026

Almost half (48 per cent) of the public in the Czech Republic are interested in the topic of local food, whilst a clear majority (52 per cent) are not particularly interested or not interested at all. Interest in this topic is gradually growing.
Two-thirds (66 per cent) of respondents stated that they give preference to local food at least occasionally when shopping; of these, 2 per cent always do so, 21 per cent often, and 43 per cent occasionally. The most common reasons for buying local food are a desire to support local farmers and one’s own region. Other common reasons include the assumption that local food is fresher, of higher quality and tastes better. The most commonly purchased locally sourced foods include fruit and vegetables, eggs, honey and baked goods.
Opinions on the range of local food available in their place of residence and the surrounding area were almost evenly split, with 46 per cent of people perceiving it as sufficient and 41 per cent, conversely, as insufficient.

The vast majority of those surveyed stated they would be willing to buy local food, even if it were slightly more expensive. One-third (33 per cent) would accept a price increase of up to one-tenth, two-fifths (43 per cent) up to one-quarter, and for 12 per cent, even an increase of more than one-quarter would be acceptable.
Of the range of local food products, people most often miss vegetables (25 per cent), fruit (23 per cent) and meat (20 per cent). From the respondents’ perspective, the most common barriers to buying local food more frequently are the closely related issues of the complexity of organising purchases, the unavailability of such food, and time. A significant proportion of the public is also put off by the price. According to the overwhelming majority (94 per cent) of respondents, the production of local food should be supported; of these, 44 per cent feel this strongly and 50 per cent tend to agree.
According to the Czech public, the biggest problem for the development of the production and sale of local food is cheap foreign competition (87 per cent regard this as a major or moderate problem), and competition from large agricultural enterprises in the Czech Republic (83 per cent).
