Dietary preferences of Czech citizens - Potraviny (Food) 2025

In a survey realized through the probabilistic online Our Society Panel, the Centre for Public Opinion Research of the Institute of Sociology of the CAS included questions from the AV21 Strategy Sustainable Food Production and Consumption in March 2025. The survey focused on the overall views and attitudes of the Czech public towards food shopping, packaging materials and preferences regarding shopping.
The part of the survey presented in this press release investigated preferences regarding personal diet, whether people limit certain dietary components and for what reasons, as well as to what extent Czech citizens are familiar with so-called novel foods and whether they regularly include these types of foods in their diet.

The vast majority of Czech citizens say that the way they eat is important to them (92%), with two-fifths saying it is definitely important.

More than half of Czech consumers consume the vast majority of the food types or ingredients surveyed without restrictions or with only occasional restrictions. The only exceptions are foods containing palm oil, for which a comparable proportion of respondents reported unrestricted or only occasionally restricted consumption (46%) and frequent restriction or complete omission from the diet (46%).

Consumption of high-fat foods is restricted or completely excluded by 39% of respondents, foods containing (partially) solid fats are also restricted by 39%, foods with added sugar are restricted by 44% and foods with palm oil by 46%.

The main reason given by respondents for avoiding certain foods was their negative impact on health, with partially solidified fats (53%), sugar and foods with added sugar (51%), sausages (50%), high-fat foods (49%) and foods with palm oil (45%) being the most common.

Weight reduction was a frequent motivation for skipping baked goods in particular (47%), but also other categories such as high-fat foods (35%), sugar and foods with added sugar (36%), cold cuts (26%), foods containing solid fats (24%) and dairy products (19%).

However, for dairy, health restrictions or doctor's advice dominated (33%) and for exotic or out-of-season fruit, financial cost was the main reason (53%).
