In a survey conducted during May and June 2025 at the Our Society Probability Panel, the Centre for Public Opinion Research examined the attitudes of the Czech population towards the death penalty. Questions determined opinions of citizens on whether or not the death penalty should exist in the Czech Republic. In addition to the general opinion on the (non)existence of a legally introduced death penalty, it was also asked whether respondents agree or disagree with certain statements that defend or refuse the reasons for the existence of the death penalty.
More than half of respondents (52%) over the age of 15 believe that the death penalty in the Czech Republic should exist. 45% disagreed with its existence and 3% of respondents chose the option "don't know".
Of the statements that support the death penalty, the public agrees most with the statement that it "brings just satisfaction to the survivors" (66%), and least with the statement about the need to apply the principle of "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" (40%).
Among the statements refuting the existence of the death penalty, the top two are 'risk of convicting the innocent' (81%) and 'risk of abuse' (72%), with the last one describing the death penalty as an expression of political populism (32%).
