In January 2004, 60% of Czech citizens expressed willingness to participate in the election to the European Parliament. On the other hand, a quarter of Czech voters do not want to vote. The remaining 15% of respondents were still undecided. The declared willingness to participate in the election to the European Parliament does not match the willingness to participate in an election to the Chamber of Deputies.
In January 2004, 70% of all respondents would vote in an election to the Chamber of Deputies, which is by 10% more than the number of voters in the election to the European Parliament. It is, however, necessary to point out that the declared willingness to vote is always higher than the real turnout. When electing members of the European Parliament, most Czechs (55%) will choose individuals instead of political parties or movements. In respect of this election, party preferences more or less copy the popularity of individual parties in connection with the election to the Chamber of Deputies. A quarter of those surveyed say that they were still undecided about whom to vote for. The answer ‘I do not know’ was often selected by respondents who would like to elect particular persons as our representatives in the European Parliament and therefore they will only make their decision after receiving the candidate lists. The party affiliation of individual candidates is not a decisive factor for these respondents.
