Public about the Beneš Decrees

In the June survey, among other things Public Opinion Research Centre devoted a few questions to the issue of the so-called Beneš Decrees. In connection with discussions about the Beneš Decrees there have been opinions particularly coming from abroad that those Decrees that form the legal framework for the expulsion, should be cancelled. The first question therefore was to establish opinions of the Czech public as to the further validity of these Decrees.

The survey has shown that more than two thirds of respondents (67 %) are of the view that the Decrees should continue to be valid. 8 % think they should be cancelled and 26 % of respondents did not provide their opinions on the matter.

The next question concentrated on the current views of respondents as to the expulsion of Sudeten Germans after World War II. More than a half of respondents (56 %) see it as fair, on the other hand a total of 28 % consider it to be unjust.

The last question focused on how the Beneš Decrees influenced relations with neighbouring countries. The collected results have shown that approximately two thirds of respondents think that the Beneš Decrees negatively influence relations with Germany (65%) and more than two fifths with Austria (43%).
