In a survey conducted in the second half of March 2025, the Center for Public Opinion Research asked a set of questions about the concerning the assessment of the material living conditions of their households, their expectations of the development of these conditions in the current year, as well as the financial and material situation of their households.
More than half (57%) of Czech society rates the material living conditions of their households as good, 35% as ‘neither good nor bad’, and 8% consider them bad.
Just under a quarter (23%) of the population believe that their households' material living conditions will improve this year, 22% expect them to worsen, and more than half (52%) expect them to stay the same. Less than a fifth (17%) expect the economic situation in the Czech Republic to improve this year. Almost two-fifths (38%) expect the economic situation to remain unchanged. Less than two-fifths (39%) expect the economic situation to worsen.
More than a third of Czech society (36%) finds it difficult to make ends meet, while more than six tenths (63%) find it easy to make ends meet.
More than a quarter (26%) of respondents said they had been in a difficult financial situation in the last 12 months.
Two-thirds (70%) of Czech citizens consider their household to be ‘neither rich nor poor’. Another 15% consider their household to be poor. On the other hand, more than a tenth (14%) of respondents described their household as rich.
The level of subjective deprivation in various areas of consumption is lowest for basic necessities of life, such as food, clothing and household necessities (7% of respondents reported that their household has difficulty meeting them) and highest for luxury goods, with around seven in ten (84%) households reporting that their household income is insufficient to purchase these goods.
