The prestige of the professions – May 2025

In a survey conducted at the end of May and beginning of June 2025, CVVM examined the prestige of selected professions among the Czech public. All respondents were presented with a list of twenty-five professions (see table) with the following instructions: "The list contains a number of professions. Select the profession you value most and give it 99 points. Then select the one you value least and give it 01 points. Then proceed from top to bottom and assign points from 02 to 98 to all the remaining professions according to your personal judgment." The prestige of professions was last surveyed in February 2019, but due to fundamental changes in the research methodology, a direct comparison of the results is not possible.

The most prestigious profession is doctor (89 points), followed by nurse (79 points), ten points behind. Next in line are scientists (73 points, 6 points behind) and primary school teachers (71 points, another 2 points behind).

At the very bottom of the ranking this year was member of parliament (26 points), followed by journalist (38 points), minister, and priest (both 40 points).

The prestige rating of individual professions is more or less influenced by age and social status.

The prestige of the professions surveyed does not form a single continuum, but breaks down into three independent dimensions: non-manual professions, manual professions, and key professions for society.

Due to a change in the CVVM survey methodology, the results of the present survey are not directly comparable to the results of previous surveys. More information about the new methodology can be found in this press release.
