In June's wave of survey, conducted on the probability panel Naše společnost (Our Society), the Public Opinion Research Center included blocks of questions on the topics of nuclear energy, community energy, and the European Green Deal. This press release summarizes the analytical conclusions regarding the Czech public's perception of community energy. The questions asked sought to ascertain the general awareness of Czech citizens about community energy and energy communities, the perceived importance of community energy as a tool for the transition to cleaner energy sources, the extent to which Czech households are prepared to become part of an energy community, and the main reasons for not participating.
More than half (52%) of respondents have heard of community energy or energy communities, but only 3% know exactly what they are, a quarter (25%) have a rough idea of what they are, and 24% have heard of community energy but do not know what it is.
Men, university graduates, and older age groups (40-54, 55-64, and 65+) are more informed about community energy and energy communities. On the other hand, respondents who have not heard of community energy are more often women, respondents with primary education, and younger age groups.
Forty-five percent of respondents consider community energy to be an important tool for the transition to cleaner energy sources, 36% think the opposite, and 19% of respondents said they did not know.
Only 2% of respondents are members or currently plan to become members of an energy community, while another 46% plan to join a community if the opportunity arises and it is advantageous. Conversely, 8% of respondents would not be interested in joining even if it were possible in their household, and just under a fifth (19%) said that their household situation did not allow them to join an energy community.
The most frequently cited reason for not joining an energy community is financial resources, mentioned by 27% of respondents, followed by owning property that is unsuitable for participation in an energy community (23%) or not owning property at all (20%).
