Views of the Czech Public on Newly Arrived Residents from Other Countries – January 2026

In a survey conducted in the second half of January 2026, the Public Opinion Research Center asked a series of questions regarding public attitudes toward newcomers from other countries.

In this press release, we present opinions on the perceived benefits of newcomers, the presumed motivations for immigrating to the Czech Republic, and a set of statements about immigrants in the Czech Republic with which respondents were asked to express their agreement or disagreement.

Most citizens encounter people from other ethnic groups at least occasionally, with nearly half doing so once a week or more often. Only a small portion of the public (5%) has no such contact.

The public in the Czech Republic more often perceives immigrants as a benefit rather than a detriment, though a significant portion of the public holds a neutral stance. More positive attitudes are associated with more frequent personal contact with people of other ethnicities.

Economic and security reasons are considered the main motivations for coming to the Czech Republic.

Attitudes toward immigration and immigrants tend to be skeptical, though not unequivocally negative. Concerns about cultural and security impacts are more common, while positive assessments of the benefits tend to be more reserved.

About one-third of respondents have close relatives abroad, but financial support from them to families in the Czech Republic is rare.

This press release is based on data collected as part of WAPOR's 2025 Global Report on Important Topics – Migration study.
