Evaluating the last year’s development in the Czech Republic and in the democratic rights of citizens

The respondents are of the opinion that no major changes occurred in the country over the course of last year. Primarily, they are convinced that no significant change happened in the sphere of citizen participation in the decision-making process about public issues, and in the observance of human rights. There is also a widespread opinion that the situation in culture and education has not changed.

A half of respondents think that no progress has been achieved in the legal environment of our country and in living standards in general. In the opinion of the public, some areas have deteriorated, with the development of unemployment being most critically evaluated. Most citizens are also discontented with the situation in agriculture, corruption and economic crime. The range of goods and services dominates the areas that are viewed in a more positive way. The environment, development of relations with foreign countries and progress in the accession process of the Czech Republic to the EU also received a relatively favourable assessment. As regards the exercise of democratic rights in our country, the respondents took a generally positive view of the possibility to speak openly about the problems and shortcomings in the society. On the other hand, it is being confirmed that discontent prevails in many areas. Namely, 56% of those surveyed think that they are unable to influence how issues are solved in their village or town, 61% feel that their justified requirements are not fulfilled and 89% say that they cannot be involved in solving issues affecting the whole of the society.
