Involvement of Czechs in Public Life and Their Understanding of Politics – Autumn2023

In autumn 2023, the CVVM SOÚ AV ČR surveyed a set of questions on the interest and involvement of Czech citizens in politics and public life.

The share of Czech citizens who never get information about politics in the media increased significantly between surveys (by 11 p.p.). One fifth of the population never get information about politics in the media, which is currently the highest share in the history of measurement. Around a quarter (27%) say they check information about political topics often, another quarter (26%) sometimes and just under three in ten (27%) rarely. Despite this, following political issues in the media remains the most frequent activity surveyed.

A significant majority of Czech citizens also discuss politics with friends. More than a tenth (13%) often, just under three tenths (29%) sometimes, a third (33%) rarely and a quarter (25%) never does.

The majority of Czechs, however, do not engage in other activities related to political activity. The least reported activity was working for a political party, which over nine tenths (94%) of the society never engage in.

On the other hand, Czechs are most often involved in the activities of sports organisations (26%) and in the activities of civic and interest associations (19%) as well as in charitable activities (19%). On the contrary, they are least involved in the activities of political parties (3%), trade unions (7%) and churches (8%).
