Public Opinion on the Reasons to Participate in Politics – Autumn 2023

In autumn 2023, the CVVM SOÚ AV ČR asked a set of questions about the interest and involvement of Czech citizens in politics and public life.

Czech citizens consider gaining power and acquiring property to be the most important reasons for getting involved in political life ( less than half of the respondents said "definitely important", while another third said "rather important").
Czechs considers the idea of helping to solve society's problems to be the relatively least important motivation for joining politics; three-fifths of Czech citizens consider politicians to be so motivated.
In the current survey, there were no significant shifts in perceived motivations for entering politics compared to the previous survey from 2020. The only exception was a significant drop in the share of Czech citizens who strongly believe that people enter politics to help solve problems in society (from 21% in 2020 to 13% in autumn 2023).
