What do the Czech citizens understand by the terms left-wing, right-wing, conservative, and liberal – June 2025

As part of its June survey on the Our Society Panel, the Public Opinion Research Center focused on the meanings Czech citizens attribute to the terms "left-wing," "right-wing," "conservative," and "liberal".

The research also included questions about how easy it was for respondents to place themselves on scales constructed from these concepts (left–right and conservative–liberal) and whether anything came to their minds automatically or only after reflection in connection with these concepts.

Respondents most often associated the term "left wing" with social security (13.1%), the Communist Party (9.4%), and solidarity (7.9%).

The term "right wing" most often brought to mind the political party “ODS” (10.9%), freedom (10.8%), and individual responsibility (9.3%).

In the case of the term "conservative," the most frequently mentioned meanings were: resistance to change (30.8%) and traditions and customs (30.7%).

When asked about the term "liberal," respondents most often mentioned freedom/liberty/democracy (33.7%) and support for change (22.0%).

For a better understanding of the context of this press release, we recommend reading the previous press release on the topic of respondents' self-identification on the left-right and conservative-liberal scales.

Due to a change in the CVVM survey methodology, the results of the present survey are not directly comparable to the results of previous surveys. More information about the new methodology can be found in this press release.
