Confidence in constitutional institutions and satisfaction with political situation in March 2008

In March 2008 within the regular survey CVVM SOÚ AV ČR, v.v.i., questioned respondents about their confidence in constitutional institutions. In this month there was a question about their trust to Chambers of Parliament, Government, President, Local and Regional Councils.

As a part of the CVVM surveys there is a question about public satisfaction with current political situation in the Czech Republic.

Party Preferences and Voting Model in March 2008

In March survey CVVM investigated how people trust to political Parties and whether they are willing to take part in elections to Chamber of Deputies. In the press release there are two different types of information : Party preference and a model of voting behaviour.

Party preferences give us information about public sympathy with political Parties in the group of citizens who have voting right and there is also included a part of citizens who will not take part in elections or they do not knot who to vote for.

Evaluation of the situation in some areas and expected development of these areas in year 2008

The situation is the same as in previous years. People are most satisfied with supply of goods and services (73 % of respondents expressed their satisfaction), with current situation of Czech culture (58 %) and with relationships of the Czech Republic with foreign countries (45 %). On the contrary dissatisfaction prevails with such areas as a corruption and economical criminality. 73 % of Czech citizens are dissatisfied with economical criminality and 79 % of people are discontented with corruption.

Taxation in View of Public Opinion

9 % of citizens regard taxation on high-income earners as high, 20 % say it is adequate and 61 % think it is low. Taxation on average-income earners is considered to be high by 47 % of respondents, adequate by 42 % and low by 4 % of citizens. Taxation on low-income earners was supposed to be high by 72 %, adequate by 18 % and low by 3 %. 75 % of respondents think that tax rate should be higher for high-income earners than for low-income earners.

Citizens on U.S. Anti-Missile Radar Base in Czech Republic

January and February surveys of CVVM followed some questions related to the plan to locate U.S. anti-missile radar in Czech Republic. The surveys investigated Czech public's attitudes to this plan as well as to eventual referendum on this matter. The report contains main results of analysis of socio-demographic differences and time comparison with previous surveys of these questions. The survey in January included also a set of questions focused on level and objectivity of information related to location of U.

Public opinion on performance of president Vaclav Klaus

In its regular survey in January 2008 the Public Opinion Research Centre focused on the questions about the Vaclav Klaus' presidency. Most Czechs think president Klaus is good in taking care of dignity and respect of his office (79 %) and he fulfills his constitutional functions (70 %). Majority of Czech population supposes president Vaclav Klaus is an autority for people (63 %) and represents the Czech Republic in foreign countries good (61 %).

Public about presidential Competencies and a type of presidential election

In January survey CVVM focused on topic President´s position in political system of the Czech Republic. The survey investigated citizens´ opinion on single constitutional presidental competencies and his status to appoinment of government, president’s right to dissolve Chamber of Deputies, right to call an election, right to veto and its existence, status of president to appointment of Constitutional Court judges and position of president in Foreign politics field of our country.
