Party Preferences and Voting Model in March 2007

In March survey CVVM investigated how people trust to political Parties and whether they are willing to take part in elections to Chamber of Deputies. In the press release there are two different types of information : Party preference and a model of voting behaviour.

Party preferences give us information about public sympathy with political Parties in the group of citizens who have voting right and there is also included a part of citizens who will not take part in elections or they do not knot who to vote for.

Urgency of solution of some problems

The most urgent problem is supposed to be corruption closely followed by health care and economic criminality. Common criminality, unemployment, social security and functioning of economy are other areas which are considered by majority of public to be very urgent to deal with.

Czechs and Involvement in Public Life

As a part of February survey there were also some questions focused on interest of Czech citizens in political events in their country as well in the world, involvement of Czech citizens in political and public life, respondents´ attitudes to public activities leading to legislative changes and public opinions of chances that people have to influence public events.

Interest in political events divided Czech society in two parts – 50 % of respondents told our interviewers that they are interested in political events in general (answers – definitely interested and rather interested) and other half of people said that they are not interested in political events (definitely not interested and rather not interested).

Why people enter politics

As a part of February survey made by CVVM there were some questions about public opinion of reasons why people enter communal politics and state politics. Survey proved that there are not big differences in reasons why people join communal or state politics. Positive answers outbalanced the negative ones.

When talking about communal politics most respondents agree that people join politics, because they want to decide important things.

Belief and satisfaction of Czechs with UN, EU, NATO

Within the February survey of CVVM SOÚ AV ČR there was probed the confidence of Czech Citizens in European Union, North Atlantic Alliance and United Nations and then the satisfaction with membership of these institutions. More than half of Czech people confide in United Nations (56 %), on the other hand 27 % people have sceptic attitude towards this institution. Half of Czechs trust in European Union, but two fifths (40 %) have an opposite opinion.

The economic situation and material living conditions from the perspective of public opinion in central european comparison

Citizens of Slovakia, Czech Republic and Poland evaluate present economic situation in their respective countries similarly. In all three cases the share of positive expressions was about quarter and the portion of critical evaluation amounted to three tenths. Quite different is the evaluation made by Hungarians when two thirds of them judge the present economic situation in Hungary as bad.

Czech citizens identified material living conditions of their households mainly as good and in comparison with other three countries where the similar survey was made Czech evaluation is the best.

Public attitude to form of political system

As a part of February survey made by CVVM SOÚ AV ČR there were some questions about respondents´ opinions of form of political system. A half of Czech citizens are satisfied with current running of democracy, on contrary 45 % of respondents are dissatisfied with it. Only 2 % of Czech people say that it is very probable that Parliament will be dismissed and political Parties will be abolished. A tenth of Czech people think it is possible.

Citizens on U.S. Anti-Missile Radar Base in Czech Republic

About three fifths (61 %) of Czech citizens do not agree with planned deployment of U.S. anti-missile radar in Czech Republic, on the other hand a quarter (25 %) of respondents would approve it. Less than three quarters (73 %) of respondents expressed their opinion that this question should be decided in a referendum, 19 % of Czechs disagree with holding a plebiscite in this matter. People who are against the referendum are for the most part supporters of idea to locate the U.

Satisfaction with Government of Mirek Topolánek

In February survey we asked respondents how they evaluate Government of Mirek Topolánek and whether they agree with some changes in contemporary tax system, which were announced in keynote speech by Government.

Most public expressed their dissatisfaction with some question focused on their relationship to Government. If we sum answers “rather dissatisfied“ and “definitely dissatisfied“ we can see that 7 people out of 10 (68 %) are dissatisfied with Government communication with public, 66 % of respondents are not satisfied with personnal structure of the Cabinet of ministers and 64 % expressed their dissatisfation with head of Government.

Popularity of top politicians

Popularity of Party Representatives

In February 2007 CVVM SOÚ AV ČR investigated whether respondents trust to selected top politicians. They were given a list with 24 names of top politicians. In a survey there were included names of membres of Parliament, president, chairmen of Senate and Chamber of Deputies, leaders of political parties in Parliament, ombudsman and chief of Constitutional Court.

Confidence in constitutional institutions and satisfaction with political situation in February 2007

The president has been the most trustworthy constitutional institution in the long term and he enjoys trust expressed by more than three quarters of Czech citizens at this time. In the beginning of February Government with prime minister Mirek Topolánek was found trustworthy by almost a third of respondents. Traditionally the lowest numer of trustees is shared by both Chambers of Parliament. Almost a half of Czech public (46 %) trust to their Regional Council while more than two thirds of people (65 %) confide in their Local Council.
