Public attitude to form of political system

As a part of February survey made by CVVM SOÚ AV ČR there were some questions about respondents´ opinions of form of political system. A half of Czech citizens are satisfied with current running of democracy, on contrary 45 % of respondents are dissatisfied with it. Only 2 % of Czech people say that it is very probable that Parliament will be dismissed and political Parties will be abolished. A tenth of Czech people think it is possible.

Citizens on U.S. Anti-Missile Radar Base in Czech Republic

About three fifths (61 %) of Czech citizens do not agree with planned deployment of U.S. anti-missile radar in Czech Republic, on the other hand a quarter (25 %) of respondents would approve it. Less than three quarters (73 %) of respondents expressed their opinion that this question should be decided in a referendum, 19 % of Czechs disagree with holding a plebiscite in this matter. People who are against the referendum are for the most part supporters of idea to locate the U.

Satisfaction with Government of Mirek Topolánek

In February survey we asked respondents how they evaluate Government of Mirek Topolánek and whether they agree with some changes in contemporary tax system, which were announced in keynote speech by Government.

Most public expressed their dissatisfaction with some question focused on their relationship to Government. If we sum answers “rather dissatisfied“ and “definitely dissatisfied“ we can see that 7 people out of 10 (68 %) are dissatisfied with Government communication with public, 66 % of respondents are not satisfied with personnal structure of the Cabinet of ministers and 64 % expressed their dissatisfation with head of Government.

Popularity of top politicians

Popularity of Party Representatives

In February 2007 CVVM SOÚ AV ČR investigated whether respondents trust to selected top politicians. They were given a list with 24 names of top politicians. In a survey there were included names of membres of Parliament, president, chairmen of Senate and Chamber of Deputies, leaders of political parties in Parliament, ombudsman and chief of Constitutional Court.

Confidence in constitutional institutions and satisfaction with political situation in February 2007

The president has been the most trustworthy constitutional institution in the long term and he enjoys trust expressed by more than three quarters of Czech citizens at this time. In the beginning of February Government with prime minister Mirek Topolánek was found trustworthy by almost a third of respondents. Traditionally the lowest numer of trustees is shared by both Chambers of Parliament. Almost a half of Czech public (46 %) trust to their Regional Council while more than two thirds of people (65 %) confide in their Local Council.

Inflation And Real Income Of Households In View Of Public

Three fifths of Czech citizens (61 %) consider current inflation to be acceptable, on contrary roughly one fifth of people (21 %) share the opposite opinion. Present evaluation of inflation has been historically the most positive since 1993, when this survey started.

Party Preferences and Voting Model in February 2007

In February survey CVVM investigated how people trust to political Parties and whether they are willing to take part in elections to Chamber of Deputies. In the press release there are two different types of information : Party preference and a model of voting behaviour.

Party preferences give us information about public sympathy with political Parties in the group of citizens who have voting right and there is also included a part of citizens who will not take part in elections or they do not knot who to vote for.

Czech Public Attitude to the EU and to Its Extension

A third of Czech citizens (33 %) is satisfied with membership of the Czech Republic in EU. Almost a half of respondents expressed their opinion that they are neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with EU membership of the Czech Republic. On the other side 17 % of people are dissatisfied with it.

A half of respondents are satisfied with EU membership of Romania, while a third of Czech citizens do not agree with it.

Public attitude to NATO

In January survey CVVM SOÚ AV ČR investigated public attitude to membership of the Czech Republic in NATO and to some aspects concerning this membership. The question about satisfaction with membership in NATO was positively answered by more than half of respondents (55, 3%), on contrary 29, 2 % of addressed citizens shared opposite opinion . In comparison to year 2002 the same question was positively answered by 61 % and negatively by 23 % of respondents.

Czech Public and Presidential Competencies

In January survey CVVM SOÚ AV ČR focused on topic President´s position in political system of the Czech Republic. This press release presents second part of results of the survey and it completes the press information published on 15 February 2007.

The other part of survey investigated citizens´ opinion on single constitutional presidental competencies and his status to appoinment of government, president’s right to dissolve Chamber of Deputies, right to call an election, right to veto and its existence, status of president to appointment of Constitutional Court judges and position of president in Foreign politics field of our country.

Evaluation of economic level of the Czech Republic in context of some other countries

71 % of Czech citizens evaluate current economic level of the Czech Republic positively, when 3 % indicate it as very good and 68 % appraise it as rather good. On contrary 28 % of citizens judge economic level of the Czech Republic critically, when 26 % of these indicate it as rather bad and 2 % see it as very bad. On a ladder with other nine monitored states, Czech Republic took the third place ahead of all post-socialist countries, when the first and second position is occupied by Germany and Austria.
