Confidence in constitutional institutions and satisfaction with political situation

In May 2005 CVVM started a survey among responts, how they trust in constitutional institutions.

President Vaclav Klaus is still supposed to be the most trustworthy constitutional institution.According to citizens the end of governmental crisis helped to both government and constitutional institutions, first of all it helped to both Chambers of czech Parliament. In present almost a third of respondents confide in government (32%), which mean it has risen for 18 % points in comparism to previous month.

Party preferences in May 2005

All respondents having the right to vote were asked an open question (i.e. without a list of political parties being used) investigating which party they would vote for if an election to the Chamber of Deputies took place the following week. The structure of the answers given is summarised in the table (in %).

Citizens opinions of electoral methods, presidential competencies and position of president II.

This press release presents the other part of acquired results, which relate to the topic – position of president in political systém of Czech Republic.

Survey was devoted to opinions of czech public about every single constitutional presidental competence. The search was focused on what are public opinions about position of president to government, his status to appoinment of government , president’s right to dissolve Chamber of Deputies, right to call an election, right to veto and its existence, status of president to appointment of Constitutional Court judges and position of president in Foreign politics field of our country.

Citizens opinions of electoral methods, presidential competencies and position of president I.

In the April survey, CVVM extensively treated questions concerning opinions of citizens opinions about a position of the president in political system of Czech Republic.

Work attitudes

In April CVVM focused also on citizens‘ attitudes to work. Economically active Czech citizens suppose having a job to be the most important thing. The most of them consider a job, they can enjoy, to be very important. At the third place of importance

was stated a job, that brings a lot of money. Almost 8 out of 10 economically active Czech citizens think, they have job, that is useful for society and same number of repondents stated they have job, that they enjoy.

Satisfaction with job

More than three fifths of economically active Czech citizens are satisfied with their jobs. Another three out of ten respondents state that they are half satisfied and half unsatisfied. Job dissatisfaction was expressed by only 8% of respondents. Entrepreneurs and sole-traders are more satisfied with their jobs than people who are employees.

Chiefs and high qualified specialized workers are most satisfied employees.

Wedding or not

The April results of CVVM survey shows that single women are more decided to get married in future than single men.

81 % of single women and 64 % of single men would like to get married in the future.

The most frequently named reasons for getting married were “children” (50 %) and the opinion that "two is better than one” (30 %), a fifth of respondents consider taking marriage vows...

Corruption

In April survey CVVM interogated respondents with question„ Tell us, please, which of following institutions and areas of public life are mostly affected by corruption ?“ Mark it as at school, 1 means no corruption, 5 means high corruption.

Political Parties were supposed to be heavily affected by corruption, they were evaluated with mark 4 on average. Areas ,that were evaluated quite favourably - on average under mark 3, were Army (2,90), masmedia (2,81), system of education (2,61).

Agreement on EU Constitution in eyes of czech public

In April survey 2005 CVVM was concerned also on attitudes of czech citizens to European Union and on public opinions about agreement on EU constitution. Two fifths of citizens share undecided attitudes to membership of Czech Republic in EU. 30% of citizens are satisfied with Czech EU membership , on the other side 18 % of citizens are dissatisfied with it. More than a half of respondents admitted that they are not informed about content of European Constitution at all.

Czech citizens about standart of living and social conditions

In April 2005, 36% of respondents characterised the standard of living of their household to be good, 22% share the opposite opinion and 41% of respondents characterised it as neither good nor bad. 6% of citizens indicated their household to be rich, whilst 30% consider it to be poor. Almost two thirds of respondents (63%) regard their household as neither rich nor poor. Problems with current budget of their household were stated by 61% of respondents, on the other hand 35% said they have no problems with budget of the household.

Confidence in constitutional institutions and satisfaction with political situation

Highest level of trust, out of all constitutional institutions, enjoys president Václav Klaus,

though trust in him, expressed by citizens, is on the wane. 67% of respondents expressed their trust in the president. Contemporary government crisis shook with citizens’trust to government, but it shook with confidence in constitutional institutions as well and first of all with confidence in both Chambers of Parliament.
