Popularity of Top Politicians

CVVM SOÚ AV ČR in October survey investigated how respondents trust to selected politicians (see table 1 and 2). They were shown a list with 23 names of top politicians from political Parties reprezented in Chamber of Deputies.

Among Party leaders Vlasta Parkanová enjoys the highest trust expressed by respondets (53 %).She is followed by Prague city mayor Pavel Bém (44 % of trustees).

Evaluation of information in Mass Media

As a part of October CVVM survey there were also some questions investigating how Czech citizens evaluate media. We were also focused on whether people think that monitored media inform them objectively, completely and whether media offer them complete list of important events. Currently the most widespread media is TV so we asked people how often they watch Media coverage.

The best evaluated was Channel - Česká televize (the main news programme – “Events“).

Confidence in the Social Institutions

In September survey made by CVVM SOÚ AV ČR was put, among others, the question on the confidence in the social institutions. The social institutions are in this case represented by the court of law, police, army, press, TV, radio, labour union and Church. From the responses, it is possible to see the positive evaluation of media that prevails over the negative evaluation. The trust in the army was expressed by more than 60% of respondents, whereas the trust in the police was formulated by less than 50% respondents.

Opinions of people from Central Europe on Israel–Lebanon conflict

Czech public more often than Poles, Hungarians and Slovaks consider Lebanese movement Hezbollah responsible for recent Israel–Lebanon conflict, but Czechs as well as citizens of other Central European states refuse the military operation of Israel in Lebanon. In the whole region people mainly support sending of UN peace mission to south Lebanon. People from Central Europe are mostly sceptic when thinking of the future of relationships between Israelis and Arabs.

Confidence of Czech citizens in OSN, EU and NATO

In September survey made by CVVM SOÚ AV ČR we asked our respondents a question whether they trust to chosen international institutions. Confidence in all monitored international institutions prevails. OSN enjoys highest level of trust expressed by two thirds of respondents (61 %), on contrary a quarter of respondents (25 %) do not trust to OSN. Almost two thirds of respondents(58 %) also confide in the EU, otherwise 35 % do not find the EU trustworthy.

Confidence in constitutional institutions and satisfaction with political situation

In CVVM survey which was made within project Our society 2006 in October 2006 we asked our respondents a question whether they trust to constitutional institutions. Question about public confidence in constitutional institutions is regular part of CVVM surveys which help us to monitor public confidence during time. In the long term president of our country has been the most trustworthy Czech constitutional institution.

Ratings of Selected Politicians in an International Context

Trust prevails over mistrust in the case of V. Klaus, J. Chirac, T. Blair, A. Merkel, K. Annan, W. Schüssel, J. Barroso and D. Koizumi. For other personalities in international politics included in the survey, there is prevailing mistrust among the Czech public, most significant being for Fidel Castro and Alexander Lukashenko and also – though on a smaller scale – for the Presidents of the USA and Russia George Bush and Vladimir Putin.

Party preferences in October 2006

In October survey CVVM investigated how people trust to political Parties and whether they are willing to take part in elections to Chamber of Deputies. In the press release there are two different types of information : Party preference and a model of voting behaviour.

Party preferences give us information about public sympathy with political Parties in the group of citizens who have voting right and there is also included a part of citizens who will not take part in elections or they do not knot who to vote for.

Public attitudes of Czech citizens to employment

In September CVVM survey within project Our Society 2006 focused on public attitudes of Czech citizens to employment. Almost all economically active citizens wish to have certain employment they would enjoy. For 84 % of respondents the certainty of employment is very important. More than 90 % of citizens suppose employment that brings them high income to be important. Most of working respondents (more than 80 %) feel that their job is important for society and they enjoy it.

Prestige of professions

Survey proved that medicine keep constantly its eminent position among other professions as the occupation with a high prestige. 45 % of respondents regard the physician as a top occupation out of 26 monitored professions and the average evaluation of a medical profession was significantly higher than average evaluations of a scientist or a university professor, which were as prestigious professions placed on second and third rank.

What is educational background influenced by?

Everybody has chance to get such education according to his/her abilities. In September survey this statement was agreed by more than a half of respondents (47 % rather agreed, 12 % definitely agreed). In the following question respondents had to evaluace influence of various circumstances and eventualities on educational background. Own abilities and diligence were considered as most important (95 % of answers – definitely important and rather important).
